Description
Indications:
Short-term treatment of severe insomnia – helps users fall asleep faster, sleep longer, and experience fewer night-time awakenings. Paediatric anticonvulsant therapy – used in the management of myoclonic seizures in children.
Mechanism of Action:
Nitrazepam increases the activity of GABA, a neurotransmitter responsible for reducing nerve cell excitability. By binding to GABA-A receptors, it enhances chloride ion flow into neurons, stabilising electrical activity in the brain. This effect promotes sedation and prevents convulsive episodes. Additionally, it interacts with voltage-gated sodium channels, prolonging their inactive state and reducing seizure frequency.
